BATISTA ZALDIVAR, FULGENCIO (1901-1973):

When he was a sergeant of the Cuban constitutional army, he formed part of a group of the military who rebelled against Gerardo Machado’s dictatorship in 1933.  Under those extraordinary circumstances, he was placed in command of the army and reached the rank of colonel in just a few days.  However, he betrayed the revolutionary forces that fought against the tyrant and proved to be an opportunists with a servile attitude towards the United States government.

From 1940 to 1944, he was president of the Republic of Cuba, and on March 10, 1952, he headed a military coup d’etat and began a bloody dictatorship that lasted almost seven years.  That action was the result of maneuvers by Cuban and American reactionary groups who feared a popular electoral victory.
