BORDER BRIGADE:

The only land border of the Republic of Cuba is completely artificial, since its territorial limits adjoin international waters in all cases.

The Border Brigade, a unit belonging to the Eastern Army, defends that border with the territory occupied by the United States at Guantanamo Naval Base against the express will of the Cuban people and in violation of the most elemental norms of international law.

The soldiers in this unit are young people who are selected from among the best and who accept this mission voluntarily.  They make up the Ramón López Peña Fighting Vanguard, named after the first Cuban soldier who was a victim, in July 1964, of murderous shots fired from the United States base.  A women's company forms part of the brigade and its members also guard the border perimeter.

The Cuban authorities do everything in their power to avoid incidents in this border sector.
