VISION AND MISSION:

 

The National Defense College (CODEN) gives postgraduate academic training to military and civilian cadres in matters related to the preparation and comprehensive fulfillment of national defense at a strategic level.  The college has the following main tasks:

 1.     To provide the students with basic multilateral knowledge in the field of national defense and the instruments needed to interpret it comprehensively.

 2.      To carry out research into national defense in the fields of politics, economics and social and military affairs.

 

3.     To develop relations of friendship and collaboration with similar institutions and personalities of other countries, similar institutions and personalities of other countries,mainly from Latin America.

  

STUDENTS:

 The students are selected through a rigorous process that takes into account the aspiring student's experience and potentials, their age, state of health, aptitude and willingness.  Another requirement is that they have higher-level education.  In the case of members of the military, they should have at least the rank of lieutenant-colonel.

 The college keeps systematic records of its graduates' work.  The institution takes great pains to find out the results of the work and career development of each of them and it maintains periodic contact through correspondence and other means.  Graduate meetings help to update its knowledge on these former students and to receive their suggestions on improving the courses.

 

 

TEACHERS:

The college faculty is made up of invited experts and the permanent staff.  Lectures and other special contributions and some other teaching activities are given by important leaders and officials from state, political and social institutions.  The main heads of the armed institutes and highly qualified and experienced military and civilian specialists also teach there.

   

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COURSE:

The course lasts one calendar year.  Its main objectives include developing the capacity for analysis and synthesis with a strategic focus, independence and creativity; stimulating the discovery of problems and the search for solutions; encouraging polemics and the substantiation and defense of the student's own views; developing the ability to make decisions, set up projects and work to carry them out and developing the ability to work in groups for the creative solution of problems and the skills to give leadership, based on collective work.

 

In the course of their studies, the students pay frequent visits to economic, political, military and scientific organizations and exchange ideas with mass and social organizations and institutions, as well as with the population itself, as a way to encourage fraternal exchange and mutual knowledge.

 

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS:

The program of a course may also include participation in events of interest or visits abroad that contribute to strengthening relations with the armed forces of other countries and to encouraging mutual knowledge and trust.  There are also frequent meetings with students in similar institutions who visit Cuba and other people who are interested in finding out about Cuba's national defense.
