ARMY GENERAL RAÚL CASTRO RUZ

 

 Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces from 1959 to date

 He was born on June 3, 1931

 He is a Higher Military School graduate.

He participated actively in the struggles of the student movement before the beginning of Batista’s tyranny.  He was part of the group that attacked the Moncada Army Garrison and served 22 months in prison as a result of this action.  During his exile in Mexico, he participated in the preparation of the Granma yacht expedition, disembarking in Cuba on December 2, 1956. 

As a combatant of the Rebel Army he took part in the Sierra Maestra campaign and in February 1958 he was assigned the mission of crossing the former Oriente province at the head of a guerrilla column to open the Frank País Second Eastern Front to the northeast of that territory, which he commanded until the end of the liberation war.

 He was a member of the National Leadership of the Integrated Revolutionary Organizations and of the United Party of the Socialist Revolution of Cuba.  He is the Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba since its inception in October 1965, as well as First Vice-President of the Councils of State and Ministers and Deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power since they were established in 1976.

 

He has been awarded the title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba.
